the weight of offered power
Dominance, submission, agency, trust, and why offered power carries responsibility.
I have never been particularly impressed by a man who needs someone else on her knees to feel tall.
That may be a strange opening for an article about being dominant, considering I rather enjoy a woman on her knees, but there it is.
I like dominance. I like the exchange of power. I like obedience when it is freely given, resistance when it has some fire behind it, the change in a woman’s eyes when playfulness gives way to something softer and deeper, and yes, I enjoy being called Sir when I have actually earned the word.
I am not pretending otherwise. False humility is still bullshit, it just wears nicer clothes.
But somewhere along the way I came to believe that dominance has considerably less to do with how much control I can take from a woman and considerably more to do with how much control I have over myself.
That is where my philosophy starts.
In the larger relationship philosophy I have been working through, I keep returning to three things: The Whole Self, The Other, and The Third Life.
I exist first as myself. She exists first as herself. Then, if we choose one another, we begin creating this third living thing between us, the relationship itself. It has its own language, rituals, expectations, jokes, scars, habits, promises, and eventually those little looks across a room that somehow contain an entire paragraph.
D/s does not replace any of that for me. It intensifies it.
If anything, power exchange makes preserving those first two selves even more important.
A submissive woman does not cease to be whole because she kneels for me. I do not become more whole because she does. She is still a person with desires, fears, ambitions, moods, contradictions, opinions, boundaries, a past I did not create and a future I do not own.
That is important, because I have no real interest in surrender from someone who has no ability to refuse me.
Where is the pleasure in that?
I want the yes that could have been no.
I want the woman who can stand perfectly well on her own and, for reasons known to that wicked little mind of hers, decides she wants to kneel anyway.
There is something profoundly erotic about that choice.
Maybe that is why I have always found the language of taking submission a little incomplete. I can create the conditions for it. I can inspire it, invite it, command within what we have built, perhaps even draw it out of someone who enjoys making me work for it.
But the important part was hers first.
She gave it.
And anything freely given carries weight.
This is the part of dominance I think gets lost under all the leather, rope, growling, titles, rules, collars, implements, and internet arguments over whether somebody is a “real Dom.” Apparently there is a secret licensing board somewhere and I have simply misplaced the application.
I do not care much about that.
I care whether someone becomes safer or less safe when power is placed in your hands.
Because I think submission is chosen vulnerability, and dominance is the responsibility you accept for holding it.
That does not mean becoming timid. I am not interested in sanding all the teeth off dominance until it becomes an HR-approved leadership seminar.
I like teeth.
I like intensity. I like command. I like a little struggle. I like praise that has been earned and the particular little reaction certain words can produce when they have enough history behind them. I like holding someone exactly where I want her when she wants to be held there. I like the moment a brat realizes the game has shifted and that wonderfully defiant mouth suddenly seems to have misplaced half its vocabulary.
I enjoy being a dominant man.
I just do not think any of that excuses me from being a considered one.
Quite the opposite.
The more control someone offers me, the more responsibility I inherit.
Her safeword matters, obviously. But I should be paying attention long before we reach it. Breathing changes. Muscles change. Energy changes. A laugh can change. The same woman who was very enthusiastically encouraging something thirty seconds ago can suddenly discover that theory and sensation are not always the same thing.
Bodies are inconvenient like that.
So are human beings.
Thank the gods.
I would find all of this terribly boring otherwise.
A good Dom cannot outsource all of his awareness to a safeword and then switch his brain off. “Well, she didn’t say red” has never struck me as the pinnacle of masculine discernment.
She may be trusting me precisely because I notice her.
That is the real intoxication of it for me. Not mindless obedience. Attention.
Learning someone well enough that a hand on the back of her neck is not merely a hand on the back of her neck. A look is not merely a look. “Come here” can mean something entirely different depending on the tone. “Good girl” can be praise, permission, reassurance, possession, affection, or a match dropped onto gasoline.
That language becomes part of the Third Life.
It belongs to us because we built it together.
And that is also why I do not see tenderness as the opposite of dominance.
Some of the most dominant things I can do require restraint.
I can want more and choose not to take more.
I can be aroused and still think.
I can hear no without treating it as an injury.
I can hear “not tonight” without becoming a moody teenager who has been told the Xbox is being turned off.
I can receive correction without needing to win an argument about somebody else’s body.
I can push where I have been invited to push and stop where I have not.
That, to me, is masculine discipline.
Masculinity is not dominance over another person. It is discipline over oneself.
I believe that outside the bedroom too, but D/s has a rather effective way of testing whether I actually mean it.
It is easy to call yourself controlled when nobody has handed you power.
Give a man authority, desire, permission, a beautiful woman who trusts him, and enough adrenaline to make the room disappear around them, then see whether his principles remain intact.
That interests me.
Because authority is not proven by taking more than was offered.
It is proven partly by knowing that you could ask for more, perhaps even receive more, and still caring whether more is right for the person in front of you.
None of this means the submissive partner is passive in my philosophy either.
Quite the opposite.
I like submission with agency still breathing inside it.
I like a woman who can tell me what she wants and then enjoy giving me control over how she gets it. I like negotiation that does not drain all the eroticism out of the room. I like boundaries because they tell me where the playground actually is. I like enthusiasm. I like a little mischief. I like surrender that still feels unmistakably like her.
Compliance is easy to understand.
Devotion is more interesting.
Compliance can be demanded, purchased, frightened into existence, or performed because someone is afraid of losing you.
Devotion keeps choosing you.
That is the thing I want.
Not a smaller woman.
Not someone emptied of herself.
Not an obedient prop standing beside my masculinity so everybody can see how dominant I must be.
I want someone whole enough that her surrender means something.
And I want to remain whole enough that I never need to consume hers to prove mine.
So yes, I want the hierarchy. I want the ritual. I want the erotic charge of authority and surrender. I want the darkness, the growl, the teeth, the order spoken low enough that she hears immediately that I mean it.
I also want the trust underneath all of it.
Actually, I need the trust underneath all of it.
Otherwise we are mostly playing dress-up with power.
The leash only means something if she could take it off.
The kneeling only matters because she can stand.
The surrender only matters because she still belongs to herself.
And perhaps that is the paradox at the center of my style of dominance.
I do not want power because someone has less of it.
I want the power she possesses fully, looks me in the eyes, and decides to place in my hands.
Then I want to be the kind of man worthy of holding it.
