RELATIONSHIPS & INTIMACY · ADULT READERS
the space before
Teasing, edging, anticipation, attention, and the erotic value of not rushing past the best part.
I think one of the great tragedies of sex is how often people hurry past the best part.
I do not mean foreplay, exactly. I have never liked that word much. It makes everything before penetration sound like the opening act, a pleasant little warm-up before the important people come onstage. I think that is nonsense. Some of the most erotic moments I have ever known happened long before anything anyone would classify as “sex” actually happened, and sometimes the anticipation itself became more intoxicating than whatever came after.
I like the space before.
I like standing close enough to smell a woman before I touch her. Shampoo, skin, perfume, whatever faint trace of the day is still clinging to her. There is something primal about scent that bypasses all the civilized parts of the brain. You can be having a perfectly normal conversation and then suddenly catch the warmth of someone’s neck and half your vocabulary quietly leaves the building. Very sophisticated creatures, humans.
I like that first touch when you do not know yet whether it is going to stay innocent. A hand at the waist that lingers a second too long. Fingers brushing the inside of an arm. A kiss behind the ear that was probably unnecessary and therefore absolutely necessary. The kind of touch that leaves the body with a question before the mind has finished answering it.
That is where teasing begins for me. Not with denial. With suggestion.
The body is wonderfully easy to haunt.
Touch somewhere once, gently, and leave. Come back later with your mouth. Let warm breath reach the skin before your lips do. Trace a shoulder blade slowly enough that she starts paying attention to the path. Kiss the place beneath the ear where people seem to forget their posture. Let your fingers pass beneath the arm, along the ribs, over the waist, then somewhere else entirely. There are places on the body people do not think of as sexual until someone touches them like they are.
That distinction matters.
You can touch a thigh like you are moving it out of the way.
Or you can touch a thigh like you have been thinking about it all evening.
Those are not remotely the same touch.
I have always loved the way a body begins to reveal itself when you slow down enough to notice it. The tiny lift toward your hand. The breath that catches but does not quite become a sound. The gooseflesh. The way someone who was talking quite confidently a moment ago suddenly needs to remember the rest of her sentence. I enjoy that immensely. Perhaps more than I should, but I have made peace with many of my character flaws.
And there are so many places to play before you ever arrive where everyone expects you to go. The neck. The jaw. The back. The long edges around the shoulder blades. The ribs. The hollow beneath the arm. The inner arm where the skin changes texture. The hip. The lower stomach. The crease where thigh becomes pelvis. The inner thigh itself, which I consider one of nature’s better design decisions.
You do not have to turn any of this into a system. In fact, please don’t.
I am suspicious of anything in sex that begins sounding like assembly instructions.
Step one: kiss here.
Step two: stroke there.
Step three: congratulations, orgasm.
Bodies are not IKEA furniture. Though both occasionally involve confusing positions and someone asking whether you are sure that piece goes there.
What I mean is that sensuality has a rhythm, but it should still feel alive.
Massage can become teasing almost without anyone noticing when the transition happened. Start with real pressure. Work the shoulders. The back. The muscles beside the spine. Let someone actually relax under your hands. Then gradually let those hands become less useful and more curious. A thumb becomes fingertips. Fingertips become nails barely brushing the skin. Pressure becomes a slow glide. Your mouth replaces your hand. Your breath reaches somewhere before your lips do.
Now the body is listening differently.
That change interests me more than rushing directly toward the obvious places.
There is a strange pleasure in letting someone realize that your attention is wandering.
Not wandering away.
Wandering toward.
A kiss on the shoulder becomes one at the base of the neck. Then another along the ribs. Then nothing for a moment but hands. Then the mouth again somewhere lower. It becomes difficult to tell where massage ended and desire began, which is exactly how I like it.
And then there is almost.
Almost deserves its own religion.
Almost kissed.
Almost touched.
Almost entered.
Almost given exactly what she thinks is coming next.
There is a specific kind of electricity in bringing someone right to the edge of expectation and then changing direction. Not cruelly. Not mechanically. Playfully.
You let your mouth travel down the stomach, across the hip, toward the inner thigh, and now the entire body knows what it thinks is coming. Perhaps you kiss higher. Perhaps you do not. Perhaps you let your breath do half the work while your mouth becomes interested in somewhere else again.
The body starts anticipating you.
That is when teasing becomes delicious.
Because eventually I am not creating every sensation myself anymore. Her own imagination has joined me.
And imagination is filthy when properly encouraged.
This is part of why I think people misunderstand edging. It gets reduced to getting someone close to orgasm and then stopping, which is certainly one version of it, but I think the more interesting form is broader than that. It is learning how to move through arousal without always charging forward.
Build.
Drift.
Return.
Hold.
Change pressure.
Change pace.
Move somewhere nearby.
Come back.
Sometimes the pullback is barely a pullback at all. You keep contact but soften it. You move from direct stimulation to broader touch. You let one hand stay exactly where it was while your mouth leaves. You let movement become stillness, and kissing take over. You reduce rather than remove.
I like the feeling of remaining connected while letting anticipation stretch.
During oral, this can become almost hypnotic when the person enjoys it. Broad, slow contact through the vulva, gradually becoming more focused, then easing outward again before everything becomes too predictable. The tongue can linger, retreat, return. Your hands can stay on the hips or thighs, holding the body in the moment while your mouth changes the rhythm. Fingers can rest at the vaginal entrance with only shallow pressure, enough to make the possibility obvious without immediately satisfying it.
That little almost-entry can be wicked.
The body understands perfectly well what you are implying.
Then you leave it implied.
For a moment.
Maybe.
I am smiling while writing that because yes, I know exactly what kind of man that makes me.
But there is something beautiful about anticipation when it is wanted. About watching a woman become increasingly aware of every place you are not touching yet.
The word yet does enormous work in erotic life.
And the same thing can happen during penetration. You do not have to suddenly abandon the rest of the body because you have reached the part pornography tends to treat as the main event. Hands can still move. Mouths can still wander. You can slow until movement nearly stops and let everything else become louder. Kiss the neck. Hold the hips. Touch the stomach. Move away slightly, then return. Let closeness itself become pressure.
Sometimes stillness inside a sexual moment is more intense than motion.
There is something feral about holding still while both bodies want movement.
That tension.
That tiny war between patience and instinct.
I like it.
I like feeling someone begin to move against me because she wants the next part before I have decided to give it. I like that brief moment where bodies become less polite than people. Where breathing gets heavier and words become shorter and all the elegant philosophy starts losing badly to biology.
That may actually be my favorite part.
The philosophy can come back later.
There is room for both.
That is what I mean when I talk about edging as something more than denial. It can be a long conversation between hunger and restraint. Let the hunger rise. Let it speak. Give it something. Take your time. Change the sensation without killing it. Let the body wonder. Let it chase you a little.
And sometimes, of course, the correct move is to stop being clever.
That matters too.
There is a point where teasing is erotic and another point where the person you are with would very much like you to quit admiring your own artistry and finish what you started.
A skilled lover should know that difference.
Preferably before being informed with violence.
I joke, but only a little.
This is why I keep returning to attention. Not because I want to turn sex into a lesson in mindfulness. Gods save us from having to whisper affirmations while naked.
I mean attention in the animal sense.
Watch.
Listen.
Feel.
Notice how she responds before deciding what you are doing next.
A body will often tell you plenty if you are not too busy performing your technique to hear it.
The breath changes. Hips change. Hands change. Sounds change. Sometimes she pulls closer. Sometimes she guides you. Sometimes she suddenly becomes very clear about where she would like you to remain.
Believe her.
There is a curious ego in being good at giving pleasure, and I am not going to pretend I do not enjoy that ego. Of course I like knowing I can make someone lose composure. Of course there is satisfaction in recognizing that something I am doing is working very, very well.
I am human.
I am also old enough to know that the quickest way to become a worse lover is to become too impressed with yourself.
So I like having skill without worshipping it.
I like knowing anatomy, knowing pressure, knowing rhythm, knowing how different kinds of touch can combine, and then letting the person in front of me ruin all my clever plans by wanting something completely different.
That keeps things interesting.
And maybe this is the part of sensuality I love most.
The discovery.
Every person is a landscape you do not entirely know yet.
You can learn the obvious roads quickly. Most people can.
I want the hidden ones.
The spot beneath the ear that makes her lean into me without thinking. The place along the ribs that makes her laugh because she cannot decide whether it tickles or feels good. The exact pressure along her back that makes her body soften. The way her breathing changes when my mouth gets close to somewhere she wants touched. The tiny movements that tell me I am getting warmer.
That is intimacy to me.
Not possessing a map.
Learning one together.
And teasing is one of the best ways I know to explore it because teasing forces you to notice.
You cannot rush through anticipation.
You have to stay in the moment long enough to feel it becoming something else.
You have to let desire accumulate.
Layer by layer.
Touch by touch.
Breath by breath.
Until the person beneath your hands is not merely waiting for pleasure.
She is full of it already.
And the beautiful part is that sometimes, by the time you finally give her what she thought she was waiting for, the entire body has become part of the answer.
